Time out

You may have noticed I’ve had a bit of a break from social media the last week or so. There has been a lot of external noise going on and I wanted to get away from all of that to concentrate on what I really wanted to get out of this time.

It’s really difficult when you’re surrounded by other people’s opinions whether it’s in real life, on the TV or on social media and when most of it is negative, it can be hard to deal with it in a constructive way. Trying to filter out some of that negativity can be difficult sometimes, especially when you’re already struggling to work out how to cope with the situation or what your feelings are.

Taking a break from all that noise can be really useful to get yourself back on an even keel and ready to face the world. Sometimes you might only want to filter out one part that’s more negative than the others and sometimes you might want everyone to bugger off for a bit. Whatever you choose to do, take the time to concentrate on building your strength up – what makes you happy, what makes you feel better, what can you do to help yourself?

The answers to these questions will help you time and again to return to a more positive place in the world. Hopefully then you can reintroduce the other aspects in a more controlled manner according to how they make you feel.

For me, social media has been a bit of a quagmire of negativity for the last few weeks and I completely understand that – people are scared which leads to all kinds of negative responses. Thankfully that seems to have diminished a bit now and I can see some fun and positivity going on a bit more now.

One of the problems is that people deal with the same situation in different ways and when someone else doesn’t react in the same way, it can cause conflict. When people are already stressed or fearful, it can show as anger or indignation, trying to control situations or just hiding away from it all. I think this happened quite a lot throughout the run up to the Brexit vote and even more so afterwards which caused a lot of people to have big reactions to each other’s opinions.

As an aside, who would have thought I’d actually miss talking about Brexit?! I got absolutely sick of it but at least it didn’t involve us staying away from family and friends!!

Although this is a bit of a fragmented blog this week, what I’m trying to say is that it’s ok to feel scared of what’s going on. It’s also ok to take some time out to evaluate how you feel and whether you can do anything to help yourself. In fact I’d say it’s important to do this. Especially if you have people who are dependent on you in this situation. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

So what has this time out given to me? It’s made me realise that even though my current situation is tough, I want to keep on coaching and keep on helping people. It gives me hope and it reminds me of the positivity that abounds in the world, even when things look bleak.

I am offering free coaching sessions to anyone who needs to talk or wants to find a more positive way through the world during this time and they are currently available until the end of May.
